Huckabee Gaining Momentum

Steven F. Hotze, M.D.
February 21, 2008

While Democrats are buoyed by hope and the Republican establishment is sinking in despondency, Governor Huckabee's candidacy is gathering force.

The winds of hysteria over the candidacy of Barrack Obama are sweeping the Democrat party. Republican concerns about a Hillary Clinton nomination have been replaced with anxiety about an Obama presidency.

A few short months ago Hillary's nomination seemed inevitable. Now, in Obama, the Democrats have a found a new face and voice for change who adheres to and forthrightly advocates a liberal socialist philosophy of state paternalism, government intervention in free enterprise and hatred for the war in Iraq. Having won the last ten Democrat primaries, it appears that the momentum has shifted dramatically in favor of Obama, and that he will secure the Democrats' nomination.

This is bad news for a McCain candidacy. It would be difficult enough for McCain to defeat Hillary but a race against Obama would prove to be disastrous. This is due to the media's portrayal of Obama as a political savior and to McCain's inability to communicate core conservative values to the Republican conservative base.

McCain has been the projected Republican nominee since the Super Tuesday Primaries on February 4. Yet even with his recent endorsements from Mitt Romney, former President Bush 41 and numerous Republican establishment leaders, McCain has not gained the support of grassroot conservatives. Huckabee's recent victories in Kansas and Louisiana provide a strong warning to those who want to hand the nomination to McCain.

A Huckabee victory in the Texas Primary on March 4th would be an alarming wake up call for the Republican establishment which has manipulated the grassroots conservative voters for years and would challenge McCain's electability.

This conservative core constituency of the Republican Party holds as its first principle, the life principle. It views as the primary purpose of civil government to protect human life and the institutions of the marriage and the family which succor and train that new life which enters society. This is why the social issues are preeminent to grassroot conservatives. This explains their unswerving support of candidates who advocate the pro-life position and traditional family values.

It would be misguided to consider these individuals as single issue voters. Grassroot conservatives tend to be strong advocates of free enterprise, small businesses, and a strong national defense. They view economic prosperity as a function of society's commitment to the life principle. Their priorities are life, liberty and the economy, in that order.

This conservative constituency consists of people who are more concerned about the families and businesses in their communities than they are about Fortune 500 corporations. They are the fabric that holds America together.

Huckabee's growing support arises from his indefatigable commitment to these values. His message resonates in the hearts of conservative Americans.

By supporting Huckabee in the March 4 Republican primary, Texas conservatives can shift the momentum of the presidential race. Huckabee is the only candidate who can clearly articulate the conservative principles which will defeat the Democrats.
