Under the strong, fiscally conservative leadership of Rep. Jim Pitts, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, the Texas House passed a balanced budget which cut $23 Billion of state spending over the next two years. Rep. Pitts, Speaker Joe Straus, and the conservative members of the House deserve our accolades for making the tough spending decisions which were necessary to balance the budget without raising new taxes.

Rep. Todd Hunter holds one of the most important positions in the legislature as Chairman of the House Calendars Committee. Once any bill passes a House Committee, it is then referred to the House Calendars Committee to be set for a vote. The Calendars Committee then decides when and if any bill will be allowed to be voted on by the entire House. Obviously the chairman of the committee has a very influential role in determining which bills will be allowed to be voted upon.

Last Wednesday, the Texas House Public Health Committee passed Committee Substitute House Bill (CSHB) 1013 by a vote of 7-2.
CSHB 1013 will now be referred to the House Calendars Committee to be set for a vote. Once it passes the House, it will be sent to the Senate for approval. It will still have to be passed by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee before the full Senate will vote on it. There is still a tremendous amount of work left to be done.
