Patrick Slams GOP Leadership on the Business Tax
The Houston senator and talk radio host, who played a prominent role in crafting the new Republican party platform, issued a release today that criticized the Republican leadership for not adopting his plan to let businesses delay filing and paying the business margins tax that the Legislature passed during the 2006 special session.

Texas Business Margins Tax Op Ed
While browsing the blogs today (Thursday, June 05), I found myself lingering over Jason Embry's "Postcards from the Lege" regarding the state's margins tax. His overall assessment of the attitudes regarding the margins tax were generally right on.

Our Collectivist Candidates
On Sunday Barack Obama urged graduates of Connecticut's Wesleyan University to devote themselves to "collective service." This is not an unusual theme for a commencement address. But it was interesting how long he went on discussing various kinds of nonprofit activism without ever mentioning the virtues of commerce or of individual achievement.

Gov. Perry stepped over line on HPV
LAST SUMMER, we applauded the medical breakthrough of a new vaccine specifically approved to prevent certain strains of cervical cancer. We asked, rhetorically: Who would be against that? But we also conceded some moms and dads wouldn't want their child vaccinated, as is their prerogative.

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine
Why did Governor Rick Perry reverse his pre–election position and issue an outrageous executive order mandating that all girls in the sixth grade receive the HPV vaccine? He says that it is about saving the lives of women. If this were his true motives, then why did he issue his press release late on the Friday afternoon preceding the Super Bowl? Why didn’t he hold a huge news conference with fanfare, boasting of his efforts?

Reasons for Voting Against Business Margins Tax
This bill calls for the imposition of nothing less than an income tax on Texas business owners—a gross net receipts tax. Texas has a long-standing tradition of paying our way as we go.
